Norman Bethune was a hero. He was born in Ontario, Canada in 1890. His dream was to become a doctor like his grandfather and finally his dream came true. He worked in a very poor part of the city of Montreal. The conditions(情形) made him very sad, so he started a school for the children in the area. The school taught the enjoyment of beauty. They learned how to paint and they could enjoy beautiful art. They got used to seeing beauty all around them even though they were poor.

   During the Spanish Civil War, Dr Bethune went to Spain to help the people in suffering. He saw that many people were dying because they were unable to get proper medical help and he suggested a system that enable even very poor people to get medical treatment. This idea is known worldwide as socialized(社会化的) medical care.

   He came to China to help the Chinese army in the war against the Japanese and trained more than 1,000 local people to help the wounded soldiers. He designed the world’s first mobile medical clinic(移动医疗诊所), which saved hundreds of lives. He died on November 12th, 1939, and he was buried in Tang County, Hebei Province.

Researchers at American university have found a new and simple way to help children burn more calories and stay slim. Their idea is to make toys heavier so as to make children work harder during playtime. The research team, at Indiana State University, did tests on ten young volunteers aged between six and eight. The kids played with toys and teddy bears that had steel blocks(钢块) weighing one and a half kilograms. Test results showed the children with heavier toys burnt more calories than other children playing with common toys. The research may change how children play and increase the muscles of the parents who tidy up after their kids play.

   Dr John Ozmun was not very sure that this would solve the problem of overweight kids, but said, “This study provides one answer to the declining health of America’s youth.” He explained, “Holding heavier objects may provide chances to improve children’s health.” He told reporters that his research was just a starting point. I grew up on a farm in Dakota. My brother and I used to work in the fields. Dad wanted us to work longer, but there was a problem with the headlights(前灯) of the tractor(拖拉机). The wires kept breaking off.
